"Successful competition in the global economy is increasingly dependent on a stream of new products and services that will open up new business possibilities. At the same time it is increasingly evident that new products and services must be regarded not only as commodities in a marketplace, but also as social actors which can constrain or enable the quality of our life. In recognition of these two perspectives, Product Design and Innovation (PDI) is a new undergraduate dual degree program at Rensselaer that seeks to educate students for careers in new product development. PDI is a dual major program satisfying the requirements for the Bachelor of Science programs in engineering and Science, Technology and Society (STS). PDI prepares students to become innovative designers who can integrate contemporary technologies with changing social contexts for a new generation of advanced product designs."

"Innovative Design is a program aimed at making innovative contributions to the creation of complex systems, products and environments for the future. The program integrates advanced scientific, technical and artistic knowledge to achieve functional and aesthetic qualities and sustainability. By exploiting synergies and encouraging collaboration across a wide range of disciplines, the program attempts to make the whole a lot more than the sum of its parts. The Innovative Design organization consists of a number of research and development studios where researchers and students work together on a daily basis. Specialists from industrial partners may also join the studio. Each studio is focused on a theme derived from new or changing needs in society or from new areas of technology. The program places special emphasis on the development of design processes through the use of new methods and technology. This in particular includes the use of modelling and simulation in the design of complex technical and societal systems."

"The Product Design Engineering (PDE) course is run jointly between Glasgow School of Art (GSA) and the University of Glasgow (GU) to offer both the Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) and Master of Engineering (MEng) degrees. PDE has created a new breed of young engineers whose strength lies in the capacity for creative synthesis and whose primary task is the design and engineering of capital and consumer products. PDE's distinctive features: - benefits from two distinctive educational cultures accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers - human-centred engineering design approach - a project-driven, practice-led, studio ethos - strong partnerships with industry - good academic links
- Politechnico Milano, Italien
"The Industrial Design Course is directed towards the theoretical, scientific and professional training of the designer, in other words that particular professional figure possessing knowledge and skills relating to the design, production and enhancement of industrial products. The term industrial product, as interpreted by the Faculty of Design, does not simply refer to a material product such an automobile, a piece of furniture, an object, an article of clothing, or an accessory, but also those elements of communication and construction constituting the "sense" of a product, in areas such as graphic design and brand design, and also web sites or a fashion parade. This field of study responds to the demand for training expressed by the consumer product industry, by public administrations, by firms and companies working in communication design, interior decorating, furnishing and fashion, as well as by the marketing and distribution sectors for these products. The qualification of design technician is attained with the Degree, a figure able to perform a support role for all technical and design activities which, from the product conception phases, lead to the production and distribution phases of the product on the market, with different implications for each of the course specialisations followed. The Specialist Degree, which confers the qualification of designer, completes the training, enriching the professional profile with a high level qualification in specific design fields and through an ample contact with disciplines of other sectors such as psychology, architecture, human sciences in general, engineering sciences, etc."
- Chalmers Tekniska Högskola, Sverige

"Stanford's Joint Program in Design is a collaborative offering of the Design Division of the Mechanical Engineering Department in the School of Engineering and the Department of Art in the College of Humanities and Sciences. Its goal is to graduate designers who can synthesize technology and aesthetics in the service of human need. Program emphasis is placed on conceptual thinking, creativity, risk-taking, non-fad-driven aesthetic appropriateness, personal motivation, networking, and interdisciplinary flexibility and co-operation. We are particularly interested in the imaginative front end of design-to answer the question "what should we create?" Students are encouraged to use design processes appropriate to the task at hand. These include need-finding, ethnographic field work, becoming an expert, rapid prototyping and extensive and iterative user testing using working models which include student generated hardware, software and electronics."
- Royal College of Art, UK
"The Industrial Design Engineering Department supports a range of studies related to the practice of industrial design including research. The mainstream activity of the Department is the delivery of the joint Master's course with Imperial College. This course, the first of its kind in the world, provides a detailed postgraduate education and training in industrial design professional practice for graduate engineers. Successful completion leads to a double qualification - an MA (RCA) and the Diploma of Imperial College (DIC). The course is particularly aimed at those students with a high level of competence and interest in engineering/technology who wish to work creatively in the field of design. It will appeal to those who have always wanted to invent, to visualise, and to make, and are challenged by complex problem solving. Most importantly, applicants will have an imaginative and fundamental sense of how design can make a direct contribution to the quality of life. Very often, at undergraduate level, these ambitions remain unfulfilled."
